| [Continuing Feature] The 13th Annual “Festival of Lights" Christmas Boat Parade” .. continued from previous page |
On Saturday, December 19,
the light drizzle of occasional island rain did not put a damper to the Hawaii Kai Marina’s 13th Annual “Festival of Lights” Christmas Boat Parade. The parade, presented and hosted by the Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association (www.hawaiikaimarina.com), once again was a tremendous success. Thousands of people from all around the island gathered at the three Hawaii Kai shopping centers at twilight to watch 38 brilliantly decorated boats parade along the marina waterways. The number of vessels entered was a record since the event first started in 1997. Boats decorated with holiday lights and decorations, paraded twice around the lower marina, passing the judges to vie for several prizes, including the grand prize for best overall. The holiday themes ranged from simple but dazzling Christmas trees adorned with lights, tinsel and garland, to completely transformed vessels with guys and gals performing on the flying trapeze! Applauds could be heard throughout the marina as the boats passed by. Master of Ceremonies for the festival was Mike Buck, host of the Mike Buck Show on KHVH AM radio 830. The festival judges included Alyssa Miller, coordinator of Malama Maunalua, Elizabeth Reilly of Livable Hawaii Kai Hui, Reney Cheng of Hui Nalu Canoe Club, Bobby Moderow, Jr of the award winning group, Maunalua and Dan Dennison, Media Coordinator of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. The winner of Overall Best in Show was Tom Hinthaus, for his rendition of Cirque Du Hawaii Kai. His 24’ homemade barge was skillfully transformed to a miniature stage, and included trapeze swings with a cast of many. In the past, Tom has entertained the crowd with several themes, including a Hawaiian Aloha Spirit theme complete with fireworks, Mark Twain’s Christmas and pirates of Hawaii. Tom’s creations have won Best in Show for the past three years.

Hawaii Kai Marina Summary of January 2009 Bathymetric Survey |
| Bathymetric is the hydrographic survey that measures the depth of the water and determines the shape of the seabed.
The survey was done to find out exactly how much dredging was
needed. A follow-up survey will be done once the dredging is
completed. View the map of the recent project of the Hawaii Kai Marina.
