[Continuing Feature]  The 13th Annual “Festival of Lights" Christmas Boat Parade” .. continued from previous page
news 1On Saturday, December 19, the light drizzle of occasional island rain did not put a damper to the Hawaii Kai Marina’s 13th Annual “Festival of Lights” Christmas Boat Parade.

The parade, presented and hosted by the Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association (www.hawaiikaimarina.com), once again was a tremendous success.

Thousands of people from all around the island gathered at the three Hawaii Kai shopping centers at twilight to watch 38 brilliantly decorated boats parade along the marina waterways. The number of vessels entered was a record since the event first started in 1997.

Boats decorated with holiday lights and decorations, paraded twice around the lower marina, passing the judges to vie for several prizes, including the grand prize for best overall. The holiday themes ranged from simple but dazzling Christmas trees adorned with lights, tinsel and garland, to completely transformed vessels with guys and gals performing on the flying trapeze! Applauds could be heard throughout the marina as the boats passed by.

Master of Ceremonies for the festival was Mike Buck, host of the Mike Buck Show on KHVH AM radio 830.
news 2
The festival judges included Alyssa Miller, coordinator of Malama Maunalua, Elizabeth Reilly of Livable Hawaii Kai Hui, Reney Cheng of Hui Nalu Canoe Club, Bobby Moderow, Jr of the award winning group, Maunalua and Dan Dennison, Media Coordinator of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

The winner of Overall Best in Show was Tom Hinthaus, for his rendition of Cirque Du Hawaii Kai. His 24’ homemade barge was skillfully transformed to a miniature stage, and included trapeze swings with a cast of many. In the past, Tom has entertained the crowd with several themes, including a Hawaiian Aloha Spirit theme complete with fireworks, Mark Twain’s Christmas and pirates of Hawaii. Tom’s creations have won Best in Show for the past three years.

Prior to the start of the parade, visitors and guests were treated to live center stage entertainment at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center. Various hula troops opened the show. Featured was Maunalua, the Na Hoku Hanohano award winning group. They preformed several of their popular numbers.

In charge of coordinating the event and the “captain” behind this popular West Oahu annual event is Beverly Liddle, manager for the Hawaii Kai Marina. Beverly has already started working on her list of “things to do” for next year’s boat parade.

news 3 Besides the Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association as the major sponsor, co-sponsors include the BluWater Café, located next door to the marina office at the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center, the Hawaii Kai Towne Center, the Koko Marina Shopping Center and Hale Ali’i in Hawaii Kai. Several merchants and business’s donated various cash and gift prizes for the boat winners.

A feature slideshow of the boat parade is available here on the association's website.

Mahalo to all the co-sponsors, business’s and merchants that participated with their generous contribution of cash and gift prizes, to our distinguished judges, our photographer, Brad Goda, for his wonderful photos of the festivities and Beverly Liddle and her staff for their hard work throughout the year to make this event one of West Oahu’s major presentation.

Hawaii Kai Marina Summary of January 2009 Bathymetric Survey

Bathymetric is the hydrographic survey that measures the depth of the water and determines the shape of the seabed.  The survey was done to find out exactly how much dredging was needed. A follow-up survey will be done once the dredging is completed.  View the map of the recent project of the Hawaii Kai Marina.  Note: The map is in PDF format and the file size is quite large (5+MB).   They are cute ... But Please Do Not Feed the Ducks!

A friendly reminder for all Marina residents and guests:  Please Do Not Feed the DUCKS.  It creates unsanitary conditions for their neighbors and the noise disturbs their peace and enjoyment of the Marina. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in advance from your Marina staff.

Painting by the late Jaap Syderhound on display in the Marina Office Have you been to the Marina Office? Located in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center by Blue Water Grill, I noticed a couple of interesting wall hangings.

This is a painting done by our former marina President, Jaap Syderhound. Notice the perfect combination of colors used in this painting, which enhances the natural colors of our tropical island environment.

If you have a chance, visit Beverly and the Marina Staff to say Hi, and take a look at the wonderful photos taken over the years. Beverly also has a collage of photos from every past Festival of Lights Boat Parade which is very impressive and worth the visit just to see it.
