The successful 11th Annual Hawaii Kai
Marina Community Association's "Festival of Lights" Boat
Parade was held on Saturday, December 15th. 2007.
Once again, the Hawaii Kai
Marina office and staff organized a spectacular boat parade,
starting with an array of wonderful music and entertainment
at the main stage of the Hawaii Kai Towne Center with Kathy
Muneno as guest MC. As the crowds began to gather along the
banks of the major shopping centers and along the roadways,
colorfully decorated boats began to line up in formation to
begin the boat parade. The weather was a bit gusty and rainy,
but our boaters and audience braved the elements.
This year, there were 40 entries, the largest number since
the start of this event.
The boats paraded alongside the judges stand, where the panel
of celebrity judges scored and voted for the winners. As the
parade continued along the waterways, crowds applauded and
cheered all the boats as little keiki's perched on Dad's
shoulders watched in awe, waving to each boat passing
by.
The Grand Prize winning entry went to Tom & Jennifer
Hintnaus, for their entry "Captain Hook & Peter Pan".
Their boat was transformed to replicate a wooden pirate ship,
complete with sails and many pirates and mates on board. Tom
was Captain Hook, chasing Peter Pan! In case their names
sounds familiar, Tom & Jennifer were the Grand Prize
winner for last year's boat parade with their spectacular
rendition of the "Hokule'a Voyage".
Guest judges this year
consisted of Mr. Joseph McNamara, President and
General Manager of KHON2 Fox News, Ms. Jeanne Branch
Johnston, Planner for the Civil Defense Earthquake and
Tsunami program, Mr. Doug Harris of the Harris Ad
Agency, Kathy Muneno of KHON2 morning news and
Congressman Edward E. Case and
Councilperson Charles Djou.
Photographers Derrek
Miyahira of Island Digital Imaging and Brad Goda have
submitted their photos of the parade to our webmaster. The
photos are now online for your viewing. Click here

Thanks to everyone for
attending this year's event, from keiki's to grandma's, to
our generous sponsors, Duffy Boats, Bank of Hawaii, Navatek,
Seabreeze Parasail, The Shack and Koko Marina Shopping
Center. A special thanks to Beverly Liddle, marina manager,
for her hard work and long hours in preparing and presenting
what has now become East Oahu's major festive event.
With everything said, the staff of the Marina office wish
you a wonderful 2008 and hope to see all of you at the next Festival of
Lights boat parade for 2008.
